Week 12 of 2025

Over the centuries, we have blurred the line between true reality and the reality we have created from our own skewed understanding. The issue we have, as intelligent beings, is that all of creation—and its purpose—is so vast that our finite minds will never grasp it in its entirety. We fill in the gaps with a reality we have created. We call this hypothesis, which becomes theory, which eventually becomes our truth only because there is no tangible evidence to prove it incorrect. In many cases, we so strongly depend on the premise of what we believe to be true that we will not even consider another possibility. Imagine a couple having some trouble in their relationship. Suddenly a man notices that every week his wife is late coming home from work. He cannot prove it, but he knows she is seeing someone else. Even some of his acquaintances say they have seen her with another man. Without considering other possibilities or simply asking, he decides to leave the relationship. However, the truth is that she was preparing a surprise to help them reconnect. I know this is extreme, but sometimes we do find ourselves trying to analyze our situations without all the information. How many times do we find, in hindsight, that a situation has not turned out as we expected, imagined, or feared it would? Even our history shows how fallible we are in our theoretical conclusions. As far back as 600 BC, it was believed that the earth was the center of the universe (geocentric universe) and that the sun, moon, and other heavenly bodies orbited the earth. Much of the science throughout the centuries agreed with that theory, which was seen as fact. In 1543, the publication of De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium disproved that theory. Science in itself is not corrupt; in fact, it will support Biblical history and God’s truth when we allow the Holy Spirit to lead.

What do we need to do to keep from filling in the gaps and instead truly understand the situations?
